Hello everyone,
In March 2026, I’ve decided to take on a personal challenge — I’ll be running the Sheffield half-marathon to raise funds for our Scout Group’s Hardship Fund. As both a doctor and a Scout leader, I’ve seen firsthand how access to the right opportunities can help young people thrive — building confidence, resilience, and lifelong friendships.
Having a hardship fund helps ensure that no child misses out on Scouting because of financial barriers. It provides support for families who may struggle with the cost of equipment, uniforms, or event fees, so every young person can take part fully — whether that’s camping in the rain, cooking on a fire, or learning a new skill. In Thorpe Hesley, we have a fantastic active Scout Group, with children from a mixture of financial backgrounds, and currently there isn’t any funding accessible for our Scouts and their families. Scouting provides fantastic opportunities for children, but it shouldn’t add to financial stress.
I only started running four months ago, so this half-marathon will be a real challenge for me! Luckily, I’ll be running alongside a far more experienced friend who’s promised to train alongside me, and to keep me going when the legs (and lungs) start to complain.
The funds we raise will go directly towards helping our Scouts access the same adventures and opportunities that have shaped so many of us.
If you’re able to sponsor me — whether a little or a lot — your support will make a real difference. And if you can’t donate, please consider sharing this page to help spread the word. The ripple effect can makes waves for Scouts!
Thank you so much for supporting both my slightly mad running journey and our amazing young people. Together, we can make sure that Scouting stays open and accessible to everyone.
Be prepared — and thank you!
Kate
